A few months ago our firm polled a number of community bankers in Iowa and asked them to identify their greatest concern in today's banking environment. Truthfully we anticipated that regulatory compliance or negotiating vendor contracts would be the number one answer. We were wrong. The most popular answer was mobile banking. In light of this fact, we decided to put together a series of blog posts about mobile banking. Our goal is to cover everything from geographical trends to the reasons why mobile banking is such an important service for banks of all sizes to offer. We hope that by the end of this series, our readers will be comfortable with the basic characteristics of mobile banking and will understand the opportunities that mobile banking provides namely its ability to attract a new demographic of customers. To begin our series, we will start with the definition of mobile banking. The Federal Reserve defines mobile banking as: using a mobile phone to access your banking account, credit card account, or other financial account . . . through a web browser, via text message, or using a downloaded application. Mobile banking can be as simple as checking your balance from your smartphone and as advanced as depositing a check or paying a bill wirelessly.
