Howard Hagen, Shareholder Attorney with Dickinson, Mackaman, Tyler & Hagen P.C., Des Moines, Iowa, has been named a 2019 Amazing Outside Director for his board service to Shazam, a Johnston, Iowa-based provider of EFT services by BankBeat Magazine.

Hagen is one of five business leaders to receive the 2019 recognition, and only one of two Iowans to be honored. The other is Mark Guetzko, president of Seedorff Holdings, who serves on the board of Farmers & Merchants Savings Bank, Manchester. All honorees are chosen based on BankBeat reader nominations.

“Hagen was a natural choice for this recognition given how long he has served the community banking sector in Iowa, from his service to the state Attorney General in the 1980s and his work at the Iowa Division of Banking, all through his years at Dickinson Law, where he chairs its banking and finance group,” said Jacqueline Nasseff Hilgert, BankBeat’s editor-in-chief. “Hagen’s impact in the industry is unparalleled.”

Hagen said his governance role at Shazam is “to share his insights and to make others understand why the preservation of equal access to technology, regardless of bank size, is so important.” Shazam is actively engaged in ensuring small community banks have equal access to the evolving payments system.

“Howard is the most active member of our board,” said Paul Waltz, president and CEO of Shazam. “He is very well read; that’s how he looks ahead and sees things that are going to be changing.”  Hagen provides outside counsel to Shazam in addition to his board services. He also chairs the boards of directors of the Amana Society and Amana Farms.

Hagen’s profile, along with profiles of the other four individuals being recognized as Amazing Outside Directors, is available in the March BankBeat Issue and at BankBeat.biz.

BankBeat reaches more than 3,000 commercial banks in the Midwest through its print magazine, which is published by Minneapolis-based NFR Communications Inc. Additionally, the company produces the CFPBJournal.com, which covers the activities of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. NFR Communications also provides management services to the Bank Holding Company Association.
