Dickinson Law is proud to announce that the firm and several of our attorneys have once again been ranked among leading law firms in Iowa in the highly regarded Chambers USA 2023 guide

Chambers USA is one the top legal directories that evaluates and ranks law firms and attorneys based on their key qualities in the legal field, including technical legal ability, professional conduct, client service, commercial astuteness, diligence and commitment.

Firms were ranked in a limited number of categories and were evaluated by Chambers researchers through peer review and client interviews regarding their experiences with individual attorneys and practice areas. Dickinson Law was ranked in six practice areas.

Banking & Finance

In the area of Banking & Finance, Howard Hagen received special recognition in Chamber’s research as a Star Individual. In its commentary, Chambers noted that Howard is highly regarded as an ideal choice for clients needing advice on sophisticated banking and financial mandates for his work advising a wide client base on financing deals, complex regulatory issues and wider corporate law matters. Chambers also highlighted his strength as the “leading banking attorney in Iowa.”

Corporate/M&A

In the category of Corporate/M&A, Chambers remarked in its research that our team of M&A attorneys advises our clients on a variety of acquisitions, sales and mergers.

It noted that our team, including Notable Practitioner Amy Plummer, is “always on top of matters” and is a popular choice with clients in the financial sector, including community banks.

Labor & Employment

When it comes to Labor & Employment law, Chambers remarked that our team of attorneys handles a wide variety of labor and employment matters, and as a whole are “very astute and accessible.”

Russ Samson received special recognition in the Chambers research as a “Senior Statesperson,” having a multi-faceted practice covering discrimination and wrongful discharge claims as well as matters in unfair labor practices.

Jill Jensen-Welch was specifically noted for her broad experience in employment disputes and handling discrimination cases, including her superb service as an “expert in her field.”

Melissa Schilling, Employment & Labor Practice Chair, received accolades for handling a wide range of labor and employment matters, including representing clients in litigation before the state courts and providing ongoing advice. Her experience advising on cases involving alleged discrimination, harassment and trade secrets, was also notable. For one school district client, Melissa was noted in the commentary as it’s “go-to resource on a wide range of employment matters."

Litigation: General Commercial

In its research, Chambers stated that as a full-service law firm, our litigators cover a spectrum of real estate and employment litigation matters. It also highlighted our strength in handling corporate matters, multimillion-dollar disputes in the financial sector, and expertise representing clients in punitive damage cases and Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings.

Among client comments received, Chambers noted that our strengths include “always providing same-day responses,” and how our lawyers’ styles complement one another, “bringing great points of view to the table for consideration.”

John Lande was recognized for his representation of financial institutions and construction industry clients, and has a noteworthy focus on property assessment cases. His broad commercial litigation practice involves acting for clients from a wide range of sectors. One client noted that John is “very capable,” and has the resources on his team to meet all of its needs.

Mollie Pawlosky was noted in Chambers’ research for her skillful representation of various financial institutions and construction companies in matters pertaining to breaches of fiduciary duty and non-compete issues. Chambers commented that Mollie regularly represents clients from the insurance, construction, energy and banking sectors.

Thomas Hanson was highlighted as a respected litigator with a strong track record representing clients in a variety of commercial disputes, including shareholder-related cases. In its research, one client noted that Tom has been “very helpful in remaining aggressive towards my opponents. Many times, when I felt like giving up, he continued to encourage and keep me positive. He is a great asset to our team, and I'm grateful to have his support."

Real Estate

The research for the 2023 guide noted that our Real Estate practice has a “dedicated team” handling a range of real estate issues including land and environmental matters, as well as providing legal defense services for real estate brokers and agents, and handling real estate assessment cases. Further, it highlighted that we maintain a “prominent presence” in the agricultural sectors, regularly assisting clients with the leasing aspects of real estate transactions, and handling residential transactions, land use and platting issues. It noted that they team is “very attentive, responsive, and diligent in their responsibilities,” and are “very thorough and capable of handling complex issues.”

Jeff Baxter, Co-Chair of our Real Estate department, received accolades for focusing his practice on real estate acquisitions, leasing matters and financing transactions, and for handling matters concerning loans and franchise agreements. One of his clients reported in the research that Jeff “has been very responsive and supportive."

Ben Bruner, also Co-Chair of the Real Estate practice, drew praise for his work advising clients on transactions involving commercial, retail and mixed-use developments. He frequently assists with acquisitions and sale-leaseback transactions, as well as commercial leasing and both private and public financing matters. One of Ben’s clients reported in the Chambers research that he is “so very personable and relaxed that his demeanor helps with all interactions,” and that he is “outstanding, responsive and genuinely interested in helping our organization be successful."

Paul Tyler (recently retired) was recognized in the 2023 guide as a “Senior Statesperson” and praised for his wealth of experience in real estate transactions advising clients on property acquisitions and dispositions, as well as financing and title issues and his skills advising on matters relating to rural improvement.

Private Wealth Law

In the area of Private Wealth Law, David Repp is noted as having “particular expertise advising high net worth clients on tax matters. An interviewee client in the Chambers research says that David is “pragmatic and easy to work with."
