Grace Bogart, an Associate Attorney at Dickinson Law, has published an article, “Using Blockchain to Address the IPCC’s Climate Change Mitigation Strategies,” in the new April issue of The Environmental Law Reporter (ELR).

The ELR is a national journal covering pressing environmental topics in the legal practice and policy domain and is published by the Environmental Law Institute in Washington, D.C., an internationally recognized research and education center working to strengthen environmental protection by improving law and governance worldwide.

In her paper, Bogart demonstrates how blockchain technologies can help tackle global climate change by reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in electricity and energy generation; agriculture, forestry, and land use; industry; and transport. In addition, she identifies ways to utilize blockchain’s potentially carbon-intensive nature in a less energy-intensive manner, and discusses methods in which it can be harnessed to mitigate the main causes of climate change.

“I’m honored to have my research published by one of the top environmental legal publications,” Bogart said. “As blockchain technologies become more integrated into our everyday lives, my research shows that it’s important that we harness that technology to cause positive change, such as addressing our rising global GHG emissions.”

Bogart is a 2020 graduate of the University of Iowa College of Law and practices in intellectual property, emerging technologies, privacy and cybersecurity at Dickinson Law. While obtaining her law degree, Grace was a published student writer and editor for the Journal of Corporation Law, one of the nation’s top corporate law periodicals. She is the host of Beyond Juris, Iowa’s first syndicated legal podcast, and is a frequent blogger, focusing on emerging technology and intellectual property issues.
