Background checks are a key component to hiring and retention decisions and even workplace investigations. The Fair Credit Reporting Act, as well as various anti-discrimination and privacy laws, govern when and how to conduct background checks and what to do with their results. Supervisors get involved at critical points in background checking, and most haven't been trained about their role and the legal liabilities of it.

To appreciate what it takes to conduct a background check
Why they should not take background checks into their own hands by making their own calls or searching the internet
How to evaluate and react to negative results of background checks

REASONABLE SUSPICION DRUG TESTING IN IOWA
Did you know that Iowa has one of the strictest and most complicated drug testing laws for private employers in the United States?
If a private employer wants to conduct a reasonable suspicion drug or alcohol test on an Iowa employee, a mandatory written policy must specify this as a possibility, and management must be properly trained, in advance of the test.
Reasonable suspicion tests are unlawful if the manager's training is not up-to-date. Adverse employment actions will not survive a legal challenge, and protests of unemployment claims will be lost, if a drug/alcohol test was not lawful. This is training you can't afford to do without.
